IMMIGRANTS CONFIDENT ABOUT BRITAIN'S FUTURE

A new survey commissioned by the Observer with British Future shows that the story of Britain's identity is quite complex and many immigrants today feel proud and confident to be British. It shows how the immigrant experience is sophisticated, how many feel comfortable to live with multiple identities and happy to be part of a diverse and inclusive and tolerant country. One example sticks out - 70% of Asians feel that they are British as compared to 66% of white Britons. It seems for some immigrants, they feel more British!

The survey and some of the videos attached show how confident many people are about the vibrant and inclusive Britain. Whilst racism is not denied, it is seen as something diverse in itself, with many pockets of opportunity and tolerance for immigrants, and many white Britons positively proud and welcoming of our diversity. Also the results show a unique optimism about Britain's future, which contrasts with some of the unemployment statistics, which show BME employees suffering the most in this recession.

Britons are proud of the diversity of food choices as a result of the immigration, and the arts, business and the media have benefited from multi-coloured Britain. The Tebbit test was rejected, with 50% of Britons happy with immigrants supporting the teams of their home countries - they are free to choose whom they support.

Britain's identity is complex and dynamic. Whilst it may be difficult for some traditionalists to cope with the increasing diversity, many feel enriched by it, and do not suffer an identity crisis. It seems slowly but surely, we as a country are learning to adapt and cope with our diversity, and even turn it into positive advantages, through cooperation, dialogue, and sheer hard work and self-discipline.
